What an adventure! After 10 weeks on the road and more than 90 stops, the We Create Change Tour is finally finished!
We were so excited to celebrate the students at Western Technical-Commercial School— as school that’s truly teamed up to create change. Through We Create Change and various other campaigns, the staff and students have raised over $44,000 for Free The Children’s Adopt A Village projects, and they’re currently working towards building a school in Mwangaza, Kenya.
We decided to celebrate their actions, and the actions of students all across Canada with our biggest We Create Change Tour show yet! After Marc and Craig Kielburger thanked the students for their actions, the show was off to a powerful start when The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, took to the stage to share his advice about taking action as an individual. “Individual action makes a difference,” he told the crowd.
We were so excited to welcome a changemaker friend that we met on the road to the stage: Avery Skog! Avery is an amazing youth that we met in Morris, Manitoba who drove the We Create Change campaign in his school. Today, Avery told the packed auditorium how he got involved in his community, and got his friends excited to take action too.
Our next speaker was golden! Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Jennifer Botterill told the students her Olympic story, and how hard she had to work toachieve her dream. What an inspiring moment!
The next guest was a complete surprise—Free The Children Ambassador Nelly Furtado shocked everyone when she walked on stage. She told everybody about her travels to Kenya with Free The Children, and the impact that the girls of Kisaruni All Girls Secondary School have had on her life. She encouraged everyone to be an active citizen, saying, “When you help, you’re showing solidarity with the world!”
The day was full of inspiring words, and some of those came in the form of music! Neverest had everyone clapping and singing along to their brand new song Starlight, and Kardinall Offishall closed the show with a performance of his hit song Freedom!
Today was the perfect way to end the We Create Change Tour; A day where old and new friends came together to celebrate change. We are so grateful for active citizens everywhere and can’t wait to see how all the inspiration from this tour will continue into the future!
This spring, Spencer West embarked on the We Create Change Tour, a road trip to help Canadian youth go further in making change, brought to you by RBC and Ford, with Presenting Level Sponsors Cineplex and the Keg Steakhouse, Media Sponsor Metro and Supporting Sponsor Freshii.
