A message from Victoria MacDonald, our Chief People Officer
“Since joining WE in 2017, I’ve been focused on continuously building a best-in-class HR team and processes, drawing on more than two decades of experience. I’m proud to say that our People Operations and Culture Team possesses more than 50 years of collective experience in human resource management. We ensure that WE is not only in full compliance with labor laws and industry standards for compensation and benefits, but also strives every day to exceed those standards to provide a rewarding working environment for our incredible team of change-makers.
“It’s meaningful that, in their independent review, workplace advocates Singh Lamarche LLP stated that WE’s policies are the ‘gold standard’ in promoting accessibility, transparency and protecting employees from discrimination, harassment and sexual harrassment. I’m proud to say that our policies provide for employees’ ability to raise concerns about health and safety, or any issue, by reporting to their manager, to another manager, to me directly or anonymously through our secure online WE Connect internal communications platform.
“Similarly, it is gratifying to receive confirmation from an independent review by leading HR consultants Lee Hecht Harrison Knightsbridge that our manager development training is ‘a strong step in the right direction,’ in combination with our other people-focused processes that preserve WE’s ‘cultural essence and does not introduce burdensome processes that inhibit agility which is one of WE’s hallmark traits.’
“WE is a unique employer, offering truly amazing opportunities for young staff to gain a depth and breadth of career experience I’ve not seen elsewhere. Typically, employees in their first jobs perform very routine tasks and have no opportunity to take the lead. In contrast, we offer our Gen Y and Gen Z staff an opportunity to work hard, along with an opportunity to punch above their weight.
“I am huge a proponent of WE and the employment experience we are creating. I also realize that this environment is not for everyone. WE is a highly entrepreneurial organization where everyone is driven to move the mission forward. This means that from our founders on down we are focused on results and we embrace change. The pace of work is not for everyone. WE is also a not-for-profit where we are committed to using every dollar possible to create positive impact. Our total rewards program is different from that of other employers’ because WE is focused on ensuring dollars go toward impact.
“WE attracts a large number of new grads. These team members have an amazing energy and idealism. They choose WE as their first employer to work for a purpose-driven organization. Part of our employee value proposition is to offer these employees their first job—and in many cases they stay for their second job. WE also understands that these employees will transition outside to other employers after one and a half to two years. This is not different from other organizations, from banks to tech companies, that target new grads as part of their talent acquisition strategy.
“For those who find a fit at WE, as a non-profit, we can’t offer large salaries, but we have lots of perks, from staff trips to traveling to WE Day to our inclusive culture. We have a holiday shutdown to ensure our team gets to re-energize and spend time with family and friends. When people leave here, they are often ready for much bigger roles because of the skills and experiences they got at WE. We seek to retain the best of our younger staff and provide them with learning and development opportunities and career opportunities.
“We don’t limit our hiring to millennials. We’ve brought in mid-career professionals—from Coca-Cola, Fossil, Chapters/Indigo, RBC, Aimia, sports management and media, among many others—who are shaping and leading our programs and projects. These seasoned professionals are acting as mentors for our early career employees. We provide a great place for successful professionals who want to use their skills to make a positive change. Among those on the ‘career track,’ tenure at WE of three, five or 10 years is very common. A significant number of our senior staff have been with the organization for 10+ years.
“When you put senior people together with new professionals, magic can happen—I see it here every day.”
