Our staff come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences—each bringing something unique to the table. Meet some of our team and find out what they love about their jobs.

Deepa Shankaran

Strategic Communications Specialist

Deepa’s first job with WE (then Free The Children) was in 1999 as their first writing intern, spending a few summers with the organization helping put together pamphlets, writing website copy and working on book projects. Several years later—after completing her masters and working with a variety of other organizations—Deepa found her way back to WE, where she wrote WE Day scripts, mentored a team of writers, and worked in internal communications. Today, she’s heading up a video storytelling unit, working with community members around the world to share their stories. “I love that this is a place where big ideas can happen,” says Deepa. “If you come up with a good idea that solves a problem, you can find the support you need to bring it to life.”

Greg Rogers

Greg Rogers

Educational Partnerships Director

Officially, Greg has been at WE a year and a half—unofficially, he’s been around since the start. He has played a huge role in co-founder Marc Kielburger’s life, as his high school teacher and rugby coach. Later on, he was WE’s contact at the Toronto Catholic District School Board, where he was Student Leadership Coordinator. Greg carries these experiences into his role at WE, with his focus always being to help students realize that everyone is a leader. “When you love your job, you never have to work a day in your life,” says Greg. “WE now allows me to continue that why, sharing connections, learnings and opportunities around leadership, social justice, service learning and adventure.”

Jackie Pilon

Jackie Pilon

Executive Projects Director

Jackie came to WE as an intern while she attended university. After graduation, Jackie couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. Since joining WE in 2011, she says no two days are the same. Her years at WE have been packed with memorable experiences—from meeting Prince Harry at WE Day to taking her sisters on a staff trip to Kenya to see WE’s impacts firsthand. “Working here you can see the impacts of our work so clearly,” Jackie says. “I love being part of a workplace that really takes ‘changing the world’ seriously.”

Santai Kimakeke

Client Experiences Director in East Africa

After seeing firsthand the work WE was doing in the communities in rural Kenya he grew up in, Santai was inspired to get involved. Over the past 10 years he’s worn many hats at WE, from helping lead travel experiences to organizing trip logistics—but throughout this time, Santai’s “why” has been the same. “I really like seeing the impact of WE’s sustainable development model in practice, and talking to community members whose lives have been positively changed and who are now filled with hope and optimism,” says Santai. “The work we do is truly impactful and it’s very fulfilling to know that I am part of a bigger mission.”

Megan Harris

Megan Harris

Marketing Copywriter

After Megan graduated from journalism school she started looking for a job as a writer. As soon as she discovered WE, she knew she’d found her perfect fit—a way to combine her passion for writing with making a real difference in the world. One of her favorite parts of working at WE is seeing the impact of its projects around the world, and sharing stories about the people and places whose lives have been positively changed. “I’ve traveled to several countries to see WE’s work firsthand, so there are real faces and stories I now put behind my work,” Megan says. “No matter what project I’m working on, I know my work connects back to these people.”

Melissa Steadman

Melissa Steadman

Head of Corporate Partnerships

Having previously worked at RBC for 17 years and being closely connected to WE’s partnership with the company, working for WE was a logical next step for Melissa. She knew she wanted a role that was fulfilling and would provide purpose. Asked for the highlights of her role, Melissa can name many: whether it’s working with an incredible group of colleagues or overseeing a portfolio of partners, many whom have been supporting WE for many years. “Just being surrounded by the WE team every day, I feel like I am a better person,” says Melissa. “I know I will learn a lot from the people I work with.”

Zein Hindawi

Zein Hindawi

Youth and Family Engagement Manager

Coming from a background of teaching in Fiji, China and Jordan, Zein now spends her days at WE supporting youth in making an impact on the world around them: starting WE clubs at school, finding volunteer opportunities in their communities, planning fundraising events, traveling on ME to WE Trips, and everything in between. Zein also says that what really makes WE stand out is the people. “I love being able to connect with like-minded individuals from all walks of life,” says Zein. “Everyone shares the same passion of wanting to make the world a better place.”

Lloyd Hanoman

South Asia director

Lloyd has been working with WE for 17 years and plays a huge role in the organization’s work in South Asia. Some days, he can be found in local communities working with community members and overseeing development projects. Other days he’s meeting ME to WE travelers in India to share inspiration and stories about local projects, as well as India’s rich culture and history. “Over the past 17 years, I’ve made connections with many interesting people, who have worked with WE in many countries, and who are beneficiaries of our community development,” says Lloyd. “It’s a great learning experience to meet so many very interesting people from all walks of life.”
