Who better to explain self-compassion than the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion founded by Kristen Neff and Christopher Germer.

Here’s how they describe it: “Self-compassion is responding in the same supportive and understanding way you would with a good friend when you have a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don’t like about yourself.”

Easy right? Not always! For this reason, we’ve shared loads of self-compassion tips and strategies in the WE Well-being Playbook.

Stop for just a minute and think of ways you might offer to yourself the same care that you would extend to a loved one.

The author and teacher talks to herself! And in her book, Happiness Is an Inside Job, she shares exactly what she says:

“Sweetheart, you are in pain,” she tells herself. “Relax. Take a breath. Let’s pay attention to what is happening. Then we’ll figure out what to do.”

The word “relax”

interrupts any story that the mind is playing and replaying.

The reminder to breathe is always welcome.
