WE Schools is a revolution in education, working to bring service-learning into every classroom. The WE Schools program is aligned with Ministry of Education and Common Core guidelines, and impacts more than 4.3 million students in over 16,000 schools in North America and the UK. Service-learning is a form of experiential learning where global issues are directly linked to core curriculum, and students learn about the subject through volunteering, action and real-world problem-solving in their own communities. For example, through WE’s pedagogy partnership with the College Board, AP with WE Service is a program whereby a science or environmental studies class may learn about about the Flint, Michigan, water crisis, and then engage in testing the water quality in their own community.
WE Schools resources are developed in partnership and with direct input from educators, and we routinely seek feedback from teachers and school board officials to continually improve the program. We also engage third parties to study and quantify the impact of the WE Schools program. Mission Measurement, an organization that specializes in evaluating the impact of nonprofits and their programs, has conducted numerous surveys of educators and current and former students who have participated in the WE Schools program. Through the research of Mission Measurement, we know that youth who participate in WE Schools programs are 7 times more likely to start a campaign to solve a community social problem, 2.7 times more likely to start their own social enterprise or nonprofit organization and twice as likely to volunteer at least once a week. When they come of age, service-learning students are 1.3 times more likely to be engaged in civic and political life, and to vote consistently.
