Travel to India with WE – for free*. Thanks to Virgin Atlantic, 30 young people aged 12-18 travel to one of our WE Villages communities every summer in Rajasthan, India. On these trips, you can:

  • Experience the culture, history and way of life in a vibrant and dynamic country
  • Volunteer in a rural village, helping build a school or a well
  • Participate in interactive workshops to explore global issues

The Virgin Atlantic Be the Change Volunteer Trip Scholarship, generously provided by the Virgin Atlantic Foundation, is a key part of Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to investing in young people in the UK as young leaders and global citizens.

FAQs

Eligible applicants are UK students between the ages of 12 and 18 as of the application deadline, who have demonstrated a commitment to global issues or community volunteerism. Students must submit all required application documents (including completed application form, nomination form and a personal description stating why they are interested in the programme) by 31 March 2019. Their referee must submit their student reference by 7 April 2019.
Applicants will be selected based on personal interest, merit, and demonstrated commitment to raising awareness in their local community. The ideal candidates are young people who are already working to improve their local or global community, and who will use this experience to motivate and inspire others to take action.
30 students are chosen every year to participate in the Virgin Atlantic Be the Change Volunteer Trip.

The application process and requirements are outlined here. Since students must complete the application form in one go, we recommend preparing answers in a Word Document before beginning the online application form. Applicants must complete all six sections, including obtaining references from a nominated referee, to be considered.
Dates for the 2019 trip will be announced in October 2018. To be eligible, students must be available for the full duration of the trip and able to travel on the given dates, from a London Airport.
Students can choose to nominate themselves or can be nominated by a teacher, family member or member of their local community.
In order to apply, students must complete and submit the online application form. This form includes contact information and a personal description stating why they are interested in the programme. In addition, students must obtain permission from a parent/guardian and an online reference form submitted on their behalf by a teacher, mentor, community leader, coach, employer etc.—someone who is familiar with their interests and strengths. .
Certain travel and incidental costs are not covered by this opportunity. Each student who receives a place on the trip is responsible for covering his/her own costs for certain incidentals including passport, visa, vaccinations, insurance and spending money. We will work with students to help them fundraise for these costs, should this become a barrier to travel.

Congratulations, we hope you are as excited as we are! There’s a lot to prepare before you travel to India with us. As a first step, please read this information pack and take note of all key dates. You will be assigned a dedicated WE Schools Coordinator to guide you through the pre-departure process, who will be in touch in late April 2019.
Yes, teachers may provide a reference for as many deserving students as they like. Teachers must complete one reference form per student.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that a student will be able to visit a particular project during their trip, as volunteers travel to communities that are most in need of help. The schools and communities that students will be visiting have much in common with those they have supported through their fundraising efforts.
