Creative Coin Competition Creates Global Change
At Oriel High School in Crawley, West Sussex, students are proving that you don’t need magic to make dreams come true. With commitment, compassion and many hunts behind the sofa cushions, the whole school is transforming pennies into pencils and paper.
Across the UK, every child has the opportunity to go to school, to learn and to grow into educated adults. Oriel High School’s Community Group resolved to use their privilege for good with WE Create Change. By bringing their school community together, they would fundraise to help children in a developing country to become students too. If every student gave a little, they could create a lot of impact.
The Community Group threw down the gauntlet! All forty of the school’s mentor groups were pitted against one another, each given the challenge of turning spare change into world change. The team who collected the most would celebrate with an afternoon mentorship session in the school’s youth wing. It was all to play for!
To spread the word far and wide, the group turned orators and experts, delivering assemblies and touring each mentor group to teach them about WE Villages. By sharing the incredible impact of education in Nicaragua, their chosen country, they got their whole school involved in this phenomenal fundraiser.
“By taking action with WE Create Change, students’ wish to help others has developed, their confidence grown through public speaking and their ability to communicate within a group has improved,” said Katie Jordan, Community Development Coordinator at Oriel High School.
Every room searched, every jar emptied and every penny picked up, added up to one transformative total! The £180 donated will make a huge difference to the El Trapiche community of Nicaragua, empowering children to go to school and achieve their dreams too.
