What are some of WE Charity’s accomplishments over the last 25 years?**\\n\\nAt home, WE Charity established innovative programs designed to inspire generations of youth to take action for causes that resonated with them, leading many to volunteer for the first time in their lives. Through WE Schools and WE Day, the organization helped students turn the tide on declining civic engagement by inspiring the next generation to support more than 3,000 causes and log 70 million hours of volunteer service. When Craig and Marc started in 1995, youth were the [least likely](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/en/pub/75-001-x/2000001/4888-eng.pdf?st=qVsbJoIz) age range to volunteer. Today, they are among the [most likely](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/200626/dq200626c-eng.htm) to give their time. \\n\\nOver the years, WE Schools delivered service-learning programs to 18,000 schools in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Non-profit data experts at Mission Measurement conducted an alumni study of WE Schools and WE Day participants and found that participating youth experienced long-term behavioral change. Notably, 80 percent of alumni reported their volunteer service had continued, while 83 percent reported continued donations to charity. \\n\\nInternationally, what began as a fight against child labour grew into a global movement that works in partnership to empower communities with the tools to free themselves from poverty. The pillars of our international development model, WE Villages, were engineered over 25 years to work in five key areas—education, water, health, food and opportunity—that together create transformative and lasting impact. WE Charity has built 1,500 schools and schoolhouses around the world, educating 200,000 children; partnered with 30,000 women in its alternative income programs; and helped one million people gain improved access to health care and clean water.\\n\\n**Q. What specific projects are you most proud of?**\\n\\nWe are proud that we brought innovation, entrepreneurialism and youthful energy to the charitable sector. When we began, the sector was at the outset of a 30 year decline in giving that reached an unprecedented low in 2019 (see [here](https://www.imaginecanada.ca/en/research/30-years-of-giving) and [here](https://www.fraserinstitute.org/article/generosity-in-canada-reaching-new-lows)). \\n\\nOperating within that reality forced us to be innovative. \\n\\nWe created WE Day to inspire youth in North America and the UK to look beyond themselves to help others and become agents of positive change. Over the years, more than 1.5 million children earned their tickets to WE Day by volunteering to help more than 3,000 causes. \\n\\nWe launched ME to WE Social Enterprises to provide economic opportunity in WE Villages partner communities, as well as a sustainable source of funding for WE Charity. It created 1,500 jobs for women entrepreneurs and contributed tens of millions of dollars to support WE Charity’s mission. Since the founding of ME to WE Social Enterprises, 100% of profits have been donated to WE Charity or reinvested to grow its social mission. \\n\\nBecause of WE Villages’ five-pillar development model, [girls in rural Kenya](/we_org/en-CA/get-doing/donate/kisaruni-scholarship-program) can now attend school from first grade all the way through [college](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/we-colleges-opens-in-kenyas-maasai-mara-bringing-college-education-to-girls-in-kenya) in the facilities we helped build. Mothers can safely deliver their children at WE Charity’s Baraka [Hospital](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/first-lady-kenya-visits-baraka-hospital) in Narok County, Kenya. Famers in Ecuador’s Amazon can learn valuable, sustainable skills at the [WE Agricultural Learning Center](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/cacao-farm-ecuador-rainforest-agricultural-training). \\n\\nBut more than pride, we feel gratitude.  We are grateful to the 2,500 staff members who created a world-changing organization, including the local staff who lead WE Villages projects and create lasting change in their own communities. We are grateful to our donors and partners who enabled these free programs for youth. We are grateful to the educators and students who brought alive the curriculum about causes and service campaigns.  \\n\\n**Q. What was announced on September 9, 2020?**\\n\\nSince WE Charity was founded in 1995 every decision has been made through the lens of what is best for children. \\n\\nIt is with great sadness that WE Charity and its Board of Directors announce they are winding down the organization’s operations in Canada. The organization will be selling its assets to establish an endowment fund to sustain the charity’s existing international humanitarian programs and digitize its Canadian educational resources for long-term access.\\n\\nCOVID-19 significantly disrupted WE Charity programming. The fallout from the Canada Student Service Grant has placed the charity in the middle of political battles and misinformation that a charity is ill-equipped to fight. As a result, the financial math for the charity’s future is clear. \\n\\nWE Charity Canada has: \\n\\n- experienced significant financial pressures and loss of sponsors creating a financial situation that, without decisive action, would jeopardize important programs \\n\\n- foresees a lack of future revenue sources given the indeterminant length of time that political matters will continue\\n\\n- has calculated that its ongoing operational costs will consume savings that are essential to establishing the endowment fund to sustain its humanitarian and educational programs \\n\\nPutting children first means prioritizing them above the charity. The endowment fund will support WE Villages projects in Latin America, Asia and Africa that are currently underway, but are not yet completed. It will also fund key, large-scale infrastructure projects that need ongoing support, like the Baraka Hospital and WE College in Narok County, Kenya, and the Agricultural Learning Centre in Ecuador. \\n\\nIn Canada, the endowment fund will ensure existing WE Schools resources will be available digitally to teachers for free focused on causes, service campaigns, and youth mental health resources.\\n\\nThe endowment fund will be created by selling the assets of WE Charity Canada, including the WE Global Learning Centre. The organization will also sell nearby properties acquired as part of a capital campaign to support the organization’s 25th anniversary “Campus for Good,” a redevelopment initiative to provide free space to incubate under-35 change-makers. \\n\\nAll of the proceeds from the sale of these buildings will be used to create the endowment fund. An independent Board of Directors with skillsets for management of endowments will be appointed in the coming months to oversee the distribution of funds to programs that have been at the heart of the organization since its inception.\\n\\n  \\n\\n**Q. What current and future activities will the endowment fund support? How will it work?**\\n\\nThe endowment fund will use the interest earned to support humanitarian programs around the world in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, and ensuring the next generation of young Canadians and educators will have digital access to service-learning curriculum about causes and service campaigns.  \\n\\nWE Charity’s core international development program is called “WE Villages”. WE Villages is a unique sustainable development model made up of five pillars crucial to community development: Education, Water, Health, Food and Opportunity. Sustainability is the goal for every WE Villages project, and WE Charity designs them so they can become self-sustaining within five years. Whether building a schoolroom or fresh water well, the involvement of the community is crucial to creating and maintaining their investment in the project. This involvement, over time, creates a sense of ownership, which ensures the long-term sustainability of the project.    \\n\\nTo provide the necessary time to allow project completion and community buy-in, the endowment fund will support WE Villages projects in Latin America, Asia and Africa that have not yet reached a point of self-sustaining. It will also fund key, large-scale infrastructure projects that need ongoing support, like [Baraka Hospital](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/first-lady-kenya-visits-baraka-hospital) and [WE College](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/we-colleges-opens-in-kenyas-maasai-mara-bringing-college-education-to-girls-in-kenya) in Narok County, Kenya, and the [Agricultural Learning Centre](/we_org/en-CA/we-stories/global-development/cacao-farm-ecuador-rainforest-agricultural-training) in Ecuador.\\n\\nDomestically, the fund will ensure that all WE Schools resources for teachers and students will continue to be available online to ensure the next generation of young Canadians and educators will have digital access to a service-learning curriculum about causes and service campaigns.  \\n\\n**Q. What assets will be sold to support the endowment fund?**\\n\\nWE Charity’s forward-looking Board of Directors had always created financial plans to anchor the financial security of the organization and its projects. The acquisition of real estate means it can prioritize its beneficiaries around the world and its programs during this difficult period in its 25-year history.\\n\\nThe WE Global Learning Centre will be sold. This educational centre was funded by generous donors through a 20th anniversary capital campaign. Nearby properties had been acquired as part of a capital campaign intended for the organization’s 25th anniversary to create a “Campus for Good” to provide free space to youth-led not-for-profits and social enterprises. These properties will also be sold. All the proceeds from the sale of assets will be used to create the endowment fund. A new Board of Directors with expertise in endowments will be appointed in the coming months and they will manage the distribution of funds to support the causes that have been at the heart of the organization since its inception.  \\n\\nWhile it is an incredibly difficult decision to move forward in this way, this is exactly why we established our real estate strategy in the first place – to give the organization flexibility in addressing unforeseen circumstances. \\n\\nDue to careful business planning and decisions over the last 25 years, we created a safety net through real estate that will allow us to sustain core international projects and some domestic programming over the long term.\\n\\n**Q. What will be the structure of the endowment fund?**\\n\\nA new Board of Directors with expertise in endowments will be appointed in the coming months and will manage the distribution of funds to support the causes that have been at the heart of the organization since its inception.  \\n\\nOnce the endowment fund has been established, and its Board of Directors are in place, WE Charity Canada will not longer be operational, and its Board of Directors in Canada will be dissolved.  \\n\\n**Q. Do these changes impact WE Charity USA?**\\n\\nThere are no changes at this time in the US operations. WE Charity Canada and WE Charity USA are legally and separately registered in each country. \\n\\nThe reality is that the COVID-19 pandemic and political controversy from the Canada Student Service Grant program have disrupted every aspect of WE Charity Canada. As a result, all of WE Charity Canada’s major partnerships were paused out of respect for our generous partners who should not be the subject of political interference. Provincial funding partnerships with governments also ended and finding new partnerships in Canada during a major recession and on-going political challenges was not a viable option.  \",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"Loose\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"}],\"AltText\":\"\",\"SeoImage\":\"\",\"component\":\"BasePage\",\"StoryTitle\":\"\",\"SeoCustomTags\":[],\"StoryImageAlt\":\"\",\"StorySubtitle\":\"\",\"SeoDescription\":\"\",\"StoryCategories\":[],\"MirroringLocales\":[],\"StoryDescription\":\"\",\"StoryPrimaryImage\":\"\",\"StorySecondaryImage\":\"\"}","slug":"questions-and-answers-about-we-charity-canada","full_slug":"en-CA/about-we/we-charity/questions-and-answers-about-we-charity-canada","is_startpage":false,"parent_id":658404,"group_id":"82e7f68c-3795-433c-a6ed-bf8360fce29b"}}}}
