He reviewed all communication with Canadaland and supporting documents, and he dismissed each of Canadaland’s eight core claims in their blog post and podcast. In his report, which can be found here, Justice Goudge concludes that “these allegations by Canadaland are without merit.”\\n\\nSupported by this independent review, the WE organization delivered a Notice of Libel to Canadaland, requesting an apology and retraction.\\n\\nSince the WE organization began in 1995 with 12 volunteer staff in a suburban Toronto basement, the combined organizations of WE Charity and ME to WE have steadily grown to staff of over 720 full-time employees within Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and a total of over 1,000 around the world.\\n\\nStart-ups, and especially nonprofits, systematically experience growing pains and resource challenges; and we are no different. We are committed to continuously improving the employee experience to ensure our people achieve fulfillment, meaning and excellence in their careers with us.\\n\\nEvery year we listen to and learn from our employees in order to improve the experience and make our culture even better. Conducted by a third party and providing anonymity, TemboStatus’ most recent engagement survey shows that 80 percent of WE team members see themselves staying with WE for the foreseeable future and 87 percent are personally engaged by the work they do; 90 percent of staff say they are connected to our organization’s mission and 96 percent believe we are making a difference in the world.\\n\\nWe look to global leaders in HR to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. LHH Knightsbridge’s 2018 culture pulse study reported that WE has as a “vibrant, purpose-driven culture that continues to attract top talent.”\\n\\nSingh Lamarche LLP conduct a complete audit of our HR policies and reported they “represent the ‘gold standard’ in terms of demonstrating a commitment by WE to ensure the protection and accommodation of their employees.” WE embraces diversity, including a leadership group composed of 77 percent women.\\n\\nOrganizational psychologist Dr. David Baum conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with WE’s staff and published his case study stating that WE’s employee experience as “world-class,” from its state-of-the art headquarters to the training and growth opportunities for staff.\\n\\nAs we seek continual improvement, our anonymous employee survey reports that since 2015, there has been a 2.85 x improvement in the area of work-life balance and 5.33 x improvement in providing compensation.\\n\\nIn addition to our current team, WE has a network of 1,200+ staff alumni, who share that their time at WE was highly rewarding both professionally and personally. Mr. Brown consistently advertised the blog posts and podcasts with direct appeals to increase his company revenue.\\n\\nThe inaccurate and false content, consistently repeated throughout Canadaland’s articles and amplified through repeated social media, are causing extensive harm to WE Charity, with a serious consequence on our mission to uplift children and families from extreme poverty. As one example, as a direct result of Canadaland’s inaccurate published statements, the organization lost a half-million-dollar commitment of support—which was meant to provided 2,000 girls with a year of primary education in rural Kenya. The consequences on the lives of these young girls is profound and heartbreaking.\\n\\nWhile we support free and independent media, WE Charity cannot allow misinformation to go unchallenged when it negatively impacts our mission and our ability to meet the most basic human needs of children and families around the world. Therefore, following the unbiased and independent opinion of Justice Goudge, WE Charity has served Canadaland with two Notices of Libel, with the only request an apology and retraction of their false content. This was not a decision we took lightly. As context, the charity and its co-founders last submitted a Notice of Libel in 1997. However, Canadaland’s sustained posting of false statements over 18 months, and the fact these pieces continue to be shared extensively online, left no other option.\\n\\nIt is worth noting that WE Charity, along with the independent social enterprise ME to WE that supports WE Charity, have been the subject of numerous independent audits and reviews by respected third parties including Mission Measurement, B Labs and the Fairtrade Foundation. WE Charity has received top grades from unbiased charitable sector evaluators including MoneySense, Charity Navigator, Charity Intelligence and GuideStar. In 2017, WE was named the first ever recipient of Good Housekeeping’s Humanitarian Seal, and we have received numerous awards for our workplace culture, including Canada’s Top Employer for Young People and Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Culture. The governance and financial structures of both WE Charity and ME to WE have been reviewed by the Ontario Public Guardian Trustee, a retired Supreme Court Justice and multiple auditors.
