The World Meteorological Association predicted global carbon emissions will [drop six per cent in 2020](https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/climate-emissions-wmo-1.5540721)—the largest annual reduction since World War II. But behind the feel-good baby fox memes lie far more threatening stories, about world governments using the pandemic as cover to roll back environmental protections. \\n\\nOn April 15, the United Nations[ issued an urgent global appeal](https://news.un.org/en/story/2020/04/1061772) after governments from several countries scrapped important regulations.  \\n\\nWhen China enforced isolation after the outbreak began in Wuhan, reductions in atmospheric pollution over huge parts of the country were visible to satellites after just one week. Unfortunately, that achievement may be short lived now that China has [suspended environmental standards for businesses](https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/bvg39q/chinas-air-quality-is-about-to-get-a-whole-lot-worse-because-of-coronavirus) to help them resume operations. \\n\\nThe United States government lowered fuel efficiency requirements for cars to boost the auto and oil industries. This is anticipated to result in an [annual increase in carbon emissions](https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-03-31/trump-rolls-back-fuel-economy-standards) of 900 million tons (more than Canada emits in one year). Meanwhile, the US Environmental Protection Agency has [halted environmental monitoring of companies](https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-epa-stops-enforcing-environmental-protection-rules-2020-3) indefinitely.  \\n\\nEven at home, some Canadian provinces have [loosened environmental regulations](https://www.ecojustice.ca/environmental-regulations-rollback-covid-19/) under the blanket of COVID-19 measures.\\n\\nOf course, we need to restart the economy, but forsaking environmental protection for short-term economic gain will only hurt us over time as issues like climate change inflict [greater long-term damage](http://nrt-trn.ca/climate/climate-prosperity/the-economic-impacts-of-climate-change-for-canada/paying-the-price) than COVID-19. \\n\\nWhen the great recession struck in 2008, global carbon emissions dropped. When the economy rebounded over the next few years, emissions [hit an all-time high](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/12/111205140613.htm). That’s a dangerous pattern we are at risk of repeating in the aftermath of COVID-19—one we absolutely cannot afford. Despite emissions drops, atmospheric CO2 [still hit record levels](https://twitter.com/CO2_earth/status/1257356854017081345) in early May.\\n\\nMeanwhile, we’re losing more of nature’s defenses against greenhouses gasses, like the Amazon rainforest. Since COVID-19, Brazil has reduced environmental monitoring, and the Amazon’s Indigenous peoples, usually at the forefront protecting the rainforest from illegal loggers, are isolating to avoid the disease. Deforestation in one of the world’s most vital ecosystems [is accelerating.](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/03/brazil-amazon-protection-coronavirus-fire-season)\\n\\nWe must find ways to make permanent the temporary gains created by the pandemic—like Milan, which has the worst air pollution in Italy. The city is taking advantage of empty streets to revamp its road network, [reducing car usage](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/21/milan-seeks-to-prevent-post-crisis-return-of-traffic-pollution) in favour of bikes and public transportation. It’s a small measure, but it’s a start.\\n\\nMore than that, we need to make environmental measures part of the economic solution. Building green infrastructure like clean energy and more efficient buildings would provide the most cost-effective investment to restart the economy, according to economists who [studied more than 700 stimulus policies](https://globalnews.ca/news/6905894/coronavirus-governments-recovery-green-route-study/) enacted by G20 nations since 2008.\\n\\nIt is often said that every crisis is an opportunity.
