So they came up with the idea of organising a concert for their school and community that would also raise awareness and funds for a local mental health charity. Together, they learned about everything that goes into planning an event: from marketing, to getting licenses, to collaborating with talent. To ensure all the tasks were done effectively, we used Planner. The students came up with a list of what needed to be done and assigned it to who needed to do it. They could all see what each other were up to: if people didn’t meet their deadlines, it allowed people in their group to say ‘You didn’t get this done, now you’re stopping me from moving on to my task.’ We made sure there was a connection between our work, and someone else’s work. \\n\\nWe used Teams for everything: we recorded our meetings and captured conversations through Whiteboard. We also used Whiteboard a lot to collaborate. With Teams meetings, students were sharing documents with each other and with external companies who helped provide expertise. It was wonderful to see students collaborating with people externally—the idea of breaking that wall down and reaching out to the community doesn’t happen very often in my school. \\n\\nWe also made sure the message about taking care of our mental health had gotten out to a lot of people. Normally, this concert would only go to 300 people in the school, so we managed to get this out to about 1,500 people because we did it online and streamed it across the school. \\n\\n**What did students learn from the project? ** \\n\\nAt the beginning of the project, they looked like they were young people playing at organising an event. By the end of it, there was no playing anymore: they were working professionally and communicating professionally, and collaborating on all sorts of things with external and internal people, like Mark Cann from the Glastonbury Music Festival, and could be really proud of the piece of the work they had done. That was a really nice journey, to see them mature and take ownership. \\n\\n**What advice do you have for other schools and teachers? **\\n\\nStart with thinking how tech can improve just one area of teaching and what you want it to do, whether it’s giving information, the way you communicate with students, or how they access learning materials. \\n\\nDon’t be afraid of technology, it is amazing. It can really empower significant change in what we do as teachers and what students can do as learners. \\n\\n \",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"}],\"BlockMarginTop\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"None\",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"Tight\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"iwth-brand-light-teal-color\"},{\"Size\":\"M\",\"Text\":\"Felisa Ford: Digital Learning Specialist, Atlanta Public Schools \",\"_uid\":\"69f18504-e9a4-47cc-8f8f-0210307839a3\",\"Columns\":\"12\",\"Centered\":true,\"component\":\"Title\",\"Underlined\":true,\"BlockHtmlId\":\"\",\"BlockSpacing\":\"\",\"IsHeadingOne\":false,\"BlockMarginTop\":\"ExtraTight\",\"UnderlineColor\":\"brand-blue-color\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"None\",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"ExtraTight\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"},{\"_uid\":\"bb9498d7-10e6-4403-b76e-58abe91227b3\",\"Link1\":{\"id\":\"\",\"url\":\"\",\"_uid\":\"4559abf1-e1e0-4fda-a9c3-aec2a4b10ce7\",\"anchor\":\"\",\"linktype\":\"url\",\"fieldtype\":\"multilink\",\"cached_url\":\"\"},\"Link2\":{\"id\":\"\",\"url\":\"\",\"_uid\":\"a9efad7c-f1fb-411f-a52a-630b95f43aad\",\"linktype\":\"story\",\"fieldtype\":\"multilink\",\"cached_url\":\"\"},\"TextGroup\":\"\",\"component\":\"ContentGenericAligned\",\"ContentTag\":\"\",\"ImageGroup\":\"\",\"Link1Title\":\"\",\"Link2Title\":\"\",\"VideoGroup\":\"\",\"BlockHtmlId\":\"\",\"ButtonGroup\":\"\",\"ContentBody\":\"Along with fellow teachers Natasha Rachell and Ken Shelton, Felisa Ford is behind Lessons in Good Trouble, an immersive Minecraft experience that invites students on a journey through historic and present-day social movements around the world. What inspired it, and what are the lessons all about? **\\n\\nWe felt this (engaging students in a conversation around social justice) was something that needed to be done, and we wanted to do it in a space where kids are already active and bring it to life for them. \\n\\nWe wanted students to be able to see themselves replicated in these worlds, because representation really matters. That’s why we didn’t just want to focus on the Black Lives Matter movement or the Civil Rights Movement. We wanted to focus globally on people who have been catalysts for change and for good trouble. That’s why we included people like Gandhi and Malala: we know no matter where you are, there are people being catalysts for change, and we wanted students to know that they too can be a catalyst for change. We wanted a takeaway for students to be that you don’t have to be famous; you can do what these people did because they were just like you. \\n\\nThe “Good Trouble” title came about because where I live and work in Atlanta is the 5th Congressional District (where Congressman John Lewis served). We wanted to do something to honor Congressman John Lewis, because he always felt that it was good for us to get into “good trouble.” And we wanted to distinguish the difference between “getting into trouble” and “good trouble.” It really exposes kids to the positive side of change. \\n\\nWe also try to build in a lot of resources for teachers, because we know not everyone is comfortable talking about these topics and having these conversations. That’s why for some of the lessons we give an FAQ—we wanted to answer any questions they have about the Black Lives Matter movement or any hesitancy a teacher may have about teaching this content and provide support for them. \\n\\n**Alongside having conversations about social justice, what are some of the key learnings students take away from participating in these lessons? **\\n\\nStudents are truly learning 21st century skills, as well as social and emotional and empathy skills—they’re learning so much from these lessons. They’re also learning acceptance and tolerance, and being able to do that self-reflection, which sometimes is different for all of us. Even just having an open mind about someone who may be different from you, understanding another person’s situation and what they’ve gone through, and what we can do to help each other when things aren’t right. \\n\\n**What advice do you have for other schools and teachers? **\\n\\nI would say to a teacher who wants to use Minecraft but is intimidated by it, not to be. Because your students I’m sure are experts. You have experts in the room with you and they can walk you through it if you just make it available. Let your students teach you. We created a Minecraft Ambassador Program so our students could be the teachers of Minecraft in our district. \",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"}],\"BlockMarginTop\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"None\",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"ExtraTight\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"iwth-brand-light-teal-color\"},{\"Size\":\"M\",\"Text\":\"Ranjitsinh Disale: Teacher at Zilla Parishad Primary School in Paritewadi, Maharashtra, India \",\"_uid\":\"ddfde335-a525-4dbe-8ea5-6b9873995789\",\"Columns\":\"12\",\"Centered\":true,\"component\":\"Title\",\"Underlined\":true,\"BlockHtmlId\":\"\",\"BlockSpacing\":\"\",\"IsHeadingOne\":false,\"BlockMarginTop\":\"ExtraTight\",\"UnderlineColor\":\"brand-blue-color\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"None\",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"ExtraTight\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"},{\"_uid\":\"c38dfc4c-e909-4ffe-90e0-fd5cda79a067\",\"Link1\":{\"id\":\"\",\"url\":\"\",\"_uid\":\"a6fa15a9-557d-47a1-89ff-94c8973f101c\",\"anchor\":\"\",\"linktype\":\"url\",\"fieldtype\":\"multilink\",\"cached_url\":\"\"},\"Link2\":{\"id\":\"\",\"url\":\"\",\"_uid\":\"6b7e5aa9-974c-4646-86a4-743b292c63fc\",\"linktype\":\"story\",\"fieldtype\":\"multilink\",\"cached_url\":\"\"},\"TextGroup\":\"\",\"component\":\"ContentGenericAligned\",\"ContentTag\":\"\",\"ImageGroup\":\"\",\"Link1Title\":\"\",\"Link2Title\":\"\",\"VideoGroup\":\"\",\"BlockHtmlId\":\"\",\"ButtonGroup\":\"\",\"ContentBody\":\"Ranjitsinh Disale didn’t want his students’ learning to be limited to the four walls of a classroom or even the borders of their country. What types of activities are involved? **\\n\\nIt’s a six week-long project. Every year we invite 5,000 students to take part, and target two of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—goal #4 which is about quality education, and goal #16 which is about peace, justice and strong institutions. \\n\\nIn the first week, every student interacted with friends in other countries—we called it Peace Buddies. For example, say I’m a student talking to someone named Helen. Helen is in Pakistan and I’m in India. In the first week I’ll get a chance to talk directly to Helen, ask about her hobbies, what she likes and doesn’t like. It’s about building friendly relations with each other. \\n\\nIn the second week, students present their ideas and thoughts about why we’re fighting still between India and Pakistan. In the third week, we talk about similarities and differences between these countries. In the fourth week, we learn about empathy and compassion. In the fifth week, I invite guest speakers from peaceful countries like England, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and they share their experiences—how their country became peaceful, what it means to be peaceful, the benefits of being peaceful. Last, students find out a solution: we call it ‘what next.’ Students are expected to share their learnings from the project among their friends at school. We do activities like essay writing and poster competitions and we give out awards—most peaceful students, most peaceful country. \\n\\n**How did technology help with the project? **\\n\\nWe’ve been using Skype for many years. It helped us reach out to students and schools, to have video conferences and share our learning. We used Flipgrid to share feedback during the project, as well as PowerPoint to share information. Technology helped us bridge the gap between India and Pakistan and become friends with each other. \\n\\n**What did students learn from the project? \\n**\\nStudents learn friendship, to follow the principles of non-violence, to become peaceful and not fight each other, to help each other, to have empathy and compassion for each other and to become global citizens—they don’t want to limit themselves between the four walls of a classroom or the borders of a country. \\n\\n**What advice do you have for other schools and teachers? **\\n\\nWhen you use technology in a meaningful way, it leads to authentic learning. It can bridge the gap between regions, between countries. It’s like a powerful weapon in the hands of teachers—use it wisely, and use it for the betterment of the world. \",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"\"}],\"BlockMarginTop\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"None\",\"BlockMarginBottom\":\"ExtraTight\",\"BlockPaddingBottom\":\"None\",\"BlockBackgroundColor\":\"iwth-brand-light-teal-color\"},{\"Size\":\"M\",\"_uid\":\"28984c4e-b366-48ab-9e85-ce7647648864\",\"Columns\":\"8\",\"Centered\":true,\"component\":\"Text\",\"BlockHtmlId\":\"\",\"BlockMarginTop\":\"None\",\"BlockPaddingTop\":\"ExtraTight\",\"BodyTextContent\":\"**Unlock the power of technology with your class!
