WE is proud to announce the addition of Ethiopia as its ninth country where the WE Villages’ model of sustainable development will be implemented. This has been made possible by an exciting partnership with imagine1day, a Canadian-based charity and education-focused development organization that has been operating in Ethiopia since 2008. Together, the two organizations are joining forces to create a bright, impactful future, continuing to build on imagine1day’s work in Ethiopia and WE Charity’s sustainable impact to East Africa and the Horn of Africa.
imagine1day has been building schools, training teachers and implementing educational programs in the Tigray and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. WE will build off their tremendous work to help bring about transformative change through the WE Villages model of development, continuing with a focus on the Education Pillar of Impact. Programs in Ethiopia will expand over the next three to five years to include the remaining Pillars of Impact.
The partnership of WE and imagine1day is more than a joining of organizations—it is a merging of ideas, innovations, values and goals. WE will continue imagine1day’s commitment to the people of Ethiopia, and will empower even more people to create transformative change and break the cycle of poverty.
Located in the Horn of Africa, with a population of nearly 100 million people, Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa. The area is geographically diverse, containing jungles, deserts and countless rivers. Ethiopia contains the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any African country.
However, 30 percent of Ethiopians live on less than $1.25 per day. Eighty-five percent of the population lives in rural areas, and many children must stay home to help their families instead of attending school.
Ethiopia faces significant challenges related to food security and financial opportunities, as well as access to education, clean water, sanitation facilities and basic health care. WE Villages’ work in Ethiopia will be rooted in the needs of community members, and will be assisted by the strong government partnerships and community connections that imagine1day has tirelessly worked to craft over the past 10 years.
